What began as a curious engineer’s infatuation with improving the established bicycle wheel in the early 1980s has evolved into one of the most successful bicycle component brands. By late 1997, Rolf’s unique, patented designs gained worldwide acceptance and firmly established the Rolf brand as the leader in high performance bicycle wheel systems.
Armed with several new design patents which contribute to substantial improvements in strength, durability, weight reduction and aerodynamic performance, Rolf Prima continues to develop a comprehensive line of high performance road wheels.
From super-lightweight carbon fiber wheels that offer unparalleled ride performance to the entry-level of hand-built alloy clinchers - Rolf Prima offers something for everyone. All Rolf Prima wheels are hand-built in Eugene, Oregon.
A Custom Frame Builder’s Approach to Wheels:
Just as custom bicycle frame builders vary tube lengths and wall thickness to optimize weight to strength properties for various size riders, Rolf Prima varies the component specification on two of its high-end Vigor and Elan wheel models to better match wheel performance to the various needs of a broad range of cyclists.
This approach unburdens lighter riders from having to ride heavy wheels designed to accommodate most riders. In addition, heavier riders who ride on less than ideal roads benefit greatly from tougher rims with higher impact strength. Another benefit of tougher rim design is the extended service life without moving into a totally different wheel category.
Wheel Categories:
In order to simplify the complexity of the bicycle wheel offerings today, Rolf Prima separates all wheels into two distinct categories called AERODYNAMIC and LIGHTWEIGHT.
Aerodynamic category wheels are characterized by lower spoke counts, bladed spokes and internal spoke nipples for a distinct speed advantage over other wheels.
Lightweight category wheels are characterized by shallower rim profiles that are substantially lighter than typical aerodynamic rims and are ideal for climbing and the quick accelerations for racing in criteriums and road races.
